The Cinque Ports were a privileged place, five coastal ports in Kent: Dover, Hastings, Hythe, Sandwich and New Romney, to which Rye and Winchlesea were added later. They were established to provide ships ready for the king to use were he yo need them. In exchange they were granted special liberties and exemptions from certain taxes.
